My issue wasn't with the investing advice per se (I'm neither qualified nor licensed to provide investment advice). The issue I was responding to was the fact that there is an elephant in the room (economic meltdown) and by ignoring it, the company looks clueless and out of touch. "Clueless and out of touch" isn't a good message to be sending to your clients, especially if you manage their money.

It's unclear how long the current tailspin will last but like every other downturn in the past it is likely to pass at some point. 1 year or 10. It still make sense to save for retirement and to invest in stocks. For people that remain calm and carry on this could be a fine time to do some "common sense" investing after all.

Excellent point. The thoughtless e-mail, belies the generally thoughtless way many of these institutions went (or are still going) about their business in the first place. It is now evident to all that most of these investment firms never took the time to look at the underlying quality of the companies, mortgages, banks etc where they were investing their clients' money. The example you provide typifies the entire e-mail, sound-bite, Powerpoint approach to business, where the appearance (e.g. sending an email to thousands of people) is more important than the underlying quality of the work or data.
